Applesauce Spice Cookies

Applesauce Spice Cookies warm from the oven.

These cookies just say Autumn to me. If you’re lucky enough to be “up north” in a good apple producing region, you should get all over these cookies ASAP.

If you have a grapefruit tree in your yard like me, you can still have these cookies as they are just as delicious when made with store bought applesauce.

They are tender – soft and cakey.

Here’s what you need:

Flour, Sugar, Salt, Baking Powder, Baking Soda, Butter, Egg, Applesauce*, Raisins, Walnuts, Cinnamon, and Cloves.

This recipe came from our dear friend and neighbor Jean Smith of Amazing Apple Cake fame. Her original recipe calls for 1/2 cup of shortening, but I’m a butter girl and decided that where shortening would be good, butter would be better. Just be sure your butter is nice and soft at room temperature.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

The first thing to do is to plump up the raisins. Pour very hot (even boiling) water over 1 cup of raisins and let them hang out to soften just a bit.

In the bowl of a mixer or any other large bowl, combine 1 stick (1/2 cup) softened butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, and 1 cup applesauce*.

*If you’re using store bought applesauce, be sure to buy unsweetened applesauce. The cookies have enough sugar in the recipe without adding extra sweeteners (usually high fructose something or other). Also, if your applesauce is especially chunky, you might want to run it through a mesh strainer to get a smoother texture.

Mix these ingredients all together. Don’t worry if it looks a little lumpy.

In a separate bowl, mix together 2 cups of flour with 1 teaspoon baking powder,

1 teaspoon baking soda,

1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 teaspoon ground cloves.

Whisk the dry ingredients together so that they are thoroughly combined.

Slowly, with the mixer on low speed, add the flour to the butter and applesauce mixture.

Mix only until the dry ingredients are incorporated. Do not over mix.

Drain the raisins and add them to the batter.

Chop up 1 cup of walnuts (or other nuts) and add them to the mix.

Stir just to combine these goodies into the batter.

This batter is quite loose. Drop batter blobs by the spoonful onto greased or parchment lined cookie sheets leaving a little space for the cookies to expand.

Bake at 350 degrees for 8 – 10 minutes until puffed and golden.

Cool on a baking rack, or eat them warm, right out of the oven. That’s what I’d do.

Applesauce Spice Cookies. Also good for breakfast.

  1. Claudia, thank you for bringing these for our orchestra’s break between youth concerts. They were just delicious–a nice texture, soft rather than crisp. They taste as if they have more spices than cinnamon and cloves. A wonderful autumn treat.
